About

A quiet companion for readers, not a social feed.

What ButterReads is

ButterReads is an independent reading companion. You track the books you've read, import your Goodreads history, get recommendations that come with a clear “why this book” explanation, and browse hand-curated reading lists for fictional characters from television, film, and novels.

Why it exists

Most reading apps ask you to perform your taste in public — turning a quiet hobby into a feed of stars, streaks, and badges. ButterReads goes the other direction: shelves are private by default, the recommendation engine starts from the books you actually finished, and every pick comes with a real reason instead of an opaque score.

We are not trying to be a giant social network for books. We are trying to be the small, calm tool readers actually want between books — the one that helps you confidently pick the next one.

Who builds it

ButterReads is built and maintained by a small independent team. We are not venture funded and we are not in a hurry. The roadmap is shaped by what readers tell us they want, not by what is easiest to monetise.

If you have a question, a bug report, or a book a fictional character should be reading, we want to hear it. Reach us at contact@butterreads.com or via the contact page.

How we make money

A free tier covers shelves, character lists, Goodreads import, and a small monthly allowance of explained recommendations. A paid plan, Reader+, removes ads and unlocks unlimited recommendations. We may earn a small commission when you buy a book through one of our affiliate links — that never changes the recommendation we'd have made anyway.

Editorial standards

Character reading lists are researched and edited by humans. Where a list cites something a character is shown reading on screen, in a creator interview, or in a book, we surface the source. Where a pick is a “character fit” — a book that suits their voice without being explicitly cited — we say so. AI-assisted recommendations always come with the human-readable reasoning that drove the pick.

Privacy

Shelves are private by default. We don't sell your data. Read the full privacy policy for the details, including how we handle login security telemetry and feedback surveys.

Made with care.
